The Lewiston School District Board of Directors has voted to eliminate the “Pay to Participate” program, also referred to as “Pay to Play,” at Lewiston High School. This decision removes participation fees for athletics, building on the district’s earlier move to eliminate the fees at the middle school level. This decision reflects the District’s ongoing commitment to ensuring access and opportunity for every student.
“We believe every student should have the chance to participate fully in school activities without barriers,” said Superintendent Tim Sperber. “By removing these fees, we’re making sure all students can take part in the programs that enrich their education and help them grow.”
Participation in athletics is shown to increase student engagement, strengthen school pride, and build valuable life skills such as teamwork, responsibility, and perseverance. The Board’s decision ensures that financial constraints will no longer prevent students from pursuing these opportunities.
This step aligns with the District’s mission: Ensuring high levels of learning for ALL students. By eliminating “Pay to Play,” Lewiston is affirming that learning extends beyond the classroom and that every student deserves equal access to the full high school experience.
