Fill the Bus Food Drive

This is the 15th year for FILL THE BUS annual holiday food/non-perishables drive for local food banks from our district schools.  We run two routes.  Route 1 (Sacajawea, Centennial, Orchards, and Camelot) donations are taken to the Salvation Army. This year’s collection dates run December 2 through the morning of December 20. Please consider donating food or cash to purchase items that are needed at the food bank.

Student Leadership Groups in the schools spearhead the collection activities in their own buildings that last for about 3 weeks  This event provides a great opportunity for students throughout the schools to learn about and participate in service learning and giving back to the community.

Some examples are below.  ·

Camelot, Whitman, and Webster have held can food races during the collection time.  Webster also has provided a drive-by/drop off service in the mornings before school during the final week of collecting.

·         Centennial and Orchards student leadership have provided hot chocolate and donuts or cookies to a primary and an intermediate classroom that collect the most items. ·

McSorley has had challenges between buddy classrooms with their own incentives as well as student leadership providing juice and donuts to the class that brought in the most items. All of McSorley comes out to greet the bus on pick up day and chants “Fill that bus!” repeatedly during the loading time as many classrooms help load items. ·

Each Junior High has their own collection incentives.  Jenifer also does a Hat Drive for monetary donations. ·

All schools send home flyers and create posters for their schools to advertise and encourage participation.  ·

Two student leadership representatives from each school also ride the bus to help with gathering the donations and unloading at the two food banks.
